How a garden project works in Stratford-upon-Avon
It starts with a free site visit. We look at where the sun falls, where the water goes when it rains, where the levels change and how you actually want to use the space — somewhere to eat, somewhere for the children, or as little upkeep as possible.
Then the order of work matters. Levels, drainage and retaining walls come first. Cables for lighting and power are run in next, before any paving goes down. Paving, steps and paths follow on a full mortar bed, and lawns and planting go in last so they aren't trampled by the rest of the job.
Because the same team designs and builds it, nothing is lost between a drawing and the finished garden — the levels work, the drainage works and the lighting is where it was meant to be.
Sloping and split-level gardens
A lot of our garden work is sorting out slopes. Oak sleeper retaining walls turn an awkward bank into usable terraces, with porcelain treads on the steps and lights set into the risers so the garden is safe and usable after dark.
Raised sleeper planters can be built into the same walls, filled and planted up, so the structure and the planting are finished together rather than in two separate jobs.

Garden Design & Paving in Stratford-upon-Avon: common questions
- Do you design the garden as well as build it in Stratford-upon-Avon?
- Yes. We design around how you want to use the garden, agree the layout and materials with you, and then the same team builds it. You get one fixed written price for the whole job.
- How long does a full garden project take?
- Typically two to four weeks for a whole-garden redesign, depending on the size, the levels and the weather. Paving on its own is usually quicker, at one to three weeks.
- Turf or artificial lawn?
- We lay both. Real turf is cooler underfoot, better for wildlife and costs less to put down, but it needs mowing and feeding. Artificial lawn stays green all year with close to no upkeep, which suits shaded gardens, dogs and busy households. We'll talk through which suits your garden at the site visit.
- Can you add garden lighting and outdoor power?
- Yes. Lighting and power are planned in from the start, and the cables are run in before the paving and walls are finished — so you don't end up with surface-clipped cable or a patio that has to be lifted later.
- My garden floods or stays boggy. Can you fix that?
- In most cases, yes. Poor drainage is usually down to levels and compacted ground. We set the falls properly, add linear drainage where it's needed, and make sure water runs away from the house rather than towards it.
- Is garden work guaranteed?
- Every job carries our full 2-year parts and labour guarantee and we hold full public liability insurance. Property Perfection has been trading since August 2000.
